About Kurla East
A neighbourhoods of East Mumbai. The region named is after eponymous east Indian village that It grew out of and falls under zone five with ward ‘L’ of Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC). While the place was spelled at Cooria till late 1890. While at the central and harbour line is spelled as (LLT) Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. The name is originated from ‘Kurli’ a local name for crab. In 1805 the region was connected with Sion on Bombay Island and spelt as Sion Causeway Cooria. Kurla was well known for its salt pans which covered sixty-six acres of land. While it was well known for stone quarries of Kurla and supply of stone to city famous heritage buildings. i.e Prince of Wales Museum & General Post Office.
The region lies on the southern end of salsetted island with the east bank of Mithi River. Kurla may be divided in two zones known as Kurla (East) & Kurla (West) separated by the central line of railway. The east region is bordered with the neighbourhoods of Chunabatti, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Rahul Nagar, Sindhi Society, Munjal Nagar, Lalbaug.
